The History of Village Presbyterian Church
In 1951, Mr. W.E. (Billy) Godwin gave the church a tract of land with a large dairy barn, and along with Mr. Claude Godwin, gave additional lots to make a complete block in Lafayette Village. The first church service was held in the dairy barn on March 16, 1952 with 133 people in attendance. In 1953, the dairy barn was renovated and a steeple added. The church was officially organized on November 21, 1954 with 106 charter members.
The congregation quickly outgrew the renovated dairy barn and the present sanctuary was dedicated on November 20, 1960. The church began to grow, eventually reaching 300 in attendance for Sunday services. However, over the years the houses in Lafayette Village became functionally outdated, the neighborhood demographics changed and by 1996, the congregation declined to fewer than 50 members. In 2020, the membership stands at fewer than 30 members with typically 20-25 attending Sunday services.
North Carolina has a number of small Presbyterian congregations that are challenged to survive. Only God knows what the future holds for Village Presbyterian Church. Although we are a small congregation, we share in the hope that God has a future for our church. We take heart from the following verses in Acts 2:42-47:
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
We continue to devote ourselves to "the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer". And trust in the Lord to add to our numbers. If you are looking for a small congregation where you can make a difference in the life of the church and grow spiritual, please join us in worship this Sunday.
